The ground rules
RideHandoff is a community board where people post car leases they want to hand off, or cars they want to sell, and other people find them. These terms say what the site does, what it doesn't, and what we ask of you. By using the site you agree to them.
1. What RideHandoff is
RideHandoff is a listing service. It lets a person who holds a car lease, or owns a car, describe it — and lets other people see that description, raise a hand, and get in touch. That is the whole service.
RideHandoff is not a party to any lease, transfer, or agreement between users. It is not a car dealer, broker, lender, or agent for any leasing bank. It does not collect or hold money for either side, does not prepare or file transfer paperwork, and does not approve or reject anyone. Every transfer happens directly between the two people involved and the leasing bank that owns the car.
2. Who can use it
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You may post a lease only if you are the lessee named on it, and a car for sale only if it is titled in your name (or you have that person's permission).
- You may use contact details shown on a listing only to talk with that person about that listing.
3. Your listing
When you post a lease you are telling other people what they would be taking on. So:
- Everything in the listing must be accurate — the payment, the lease end date, the odometer reading, the mileage allowance, the fees and any cash offered or asked for.
- Before posting a lease you must read the transfer/assignment section of your lease agreement (or ask the bank) and state truthfully what it says, whether you stay responsible after a transfer, and the fee. That statement is yours; the site shows it to takers as your reading of your own contract.
- Keep the listing current. Mark it pending when a taker is with the bank and taken when the transfer is complete, or remove it.
- You give RideHandoff permission to show your listing, including your name, community and contact details, to people who use the site.
- Photos you upload must be photos you took of the actual car being listed — no stock images, no dealer photos, no other people's pictures. By uploading them you confirm you have the right to and let us display them with the listing. They are deleted with the listing.
We may edit or remove any listing at any time, for example if it looks inaccurate, is for a lease the bank won't transfer, or is a duplicate.
4. The deal is yours
RideHandoff does not verify listings, inspect cars, check credit, or confirm that anyone is who they say they are. Before you agree to anything:
- See the car and read the odometer yourself.
- Ask the bank, in writing, whether the transfer is allowed, what it costs, and whether the original lessee is released.
- Do not pay a deposit, a fee, or any "incentive" until the bank has confirmed in writing that the transfer is complete — or, for a sale, until you're signing the title together.
- If you're taking over a lease in New York, expect sales tax on the remaining payments at assumption. The listing's cost breakdown shows it once you choose your county.
- Get the taker's proof of insurance before handing over the keys.
Whatever the two of you agree to — who pays the transfer fee, cash to sweeten the deal, the handover date, the condition of the car — is between you. RideHandoff is not responsible for either person keeping their word, for the bank's decision, for the condition of any vehicle, or for any loss that comes out of a transfer.
5. Things you can't do here
- Post a lease you don't hold, or a car that doesn't exist.
- Misstate the mileage, the payment, the end date, or the bank's terms.
- Contact people for anything other than their listing — no sales pitches, no mass messages.
- Copy, scrape or republish listings or contact details.
- Harass anyone, or contact someone on Shabbos or Yom Tov when their listing asks you not to.
- Interfere with the site or try to get around its rules.
If you do, we can remove your listings and block you from the site.
6. The bank guide
The bank-by-bank guide, the cost breakdowns, the tax notes and the after-you-agree checklists are compiled from the banks' published pages, government pages, and — where a bank publishes nothing — reports from lease-transfer marketplaces. Each item says which. All of it can be out of date or simply wrong: banks change rules without telling anyone, tax rules change, fees change. Double-check everything yourself with the bank or the agency before you agree to, sign, or pay for anything. We don't take responsibility for decisions made on information from this site, and we don't promise that any of it is accurate or current.
7. Fees
Browsing, saving and raising a hand are free. When fees are on, posting a listing costs a flat, one-time fee to publish an advertisement for a fixed run (currently $39 for a lease listing, 60 days; $19 for a car for sale, 45 days; $19 to renew for 30 days). The fee is shown before you pay, is paid to us through Stripe, and is non-refundable regardless of outcome — it pays for the ad, not for a result. There is no charge to the taker or buyer, no commission, and no fee that depends on a deal happening. During the free launch period no fees are charged.
Listings run for their term and then come off the board unless renewed. Every 14 days we'll ask you to confirm a listing is still available; if you don't answer within 3 days it's hidden until you do. Removing a listing early does not earn a refund.
7a. Cars for sale
- You may list a car for sale only if it is titled in your name and you've been using it. Buying cars to resell requires a dealer license in every state — this board is for private sellers, so each person may list at most two cars for sale in any twelve months.
- Every sale listing must carry the car's real VIN, honest mileage, and its title status (clean, financed, or salvage/rebuilt). Odometer fraud is a federal offense.
- Private sales are as-is unless the seller promises otherwise in writing. RideHandoff makes no promise about any car.
- Payment and title change hands directly between buyer and seller. We recommend meeting at a bank branch; we never take deposits or hold funds.
8. Limits on our responsibility
The site is provided as-is. We work to keep it accurate and available, but we don't guarantee that it will be, or that any listing is accurate, or that any transfer will go through. To the fullest extent the law allows, RideHandoff and the people who run it are not liable for any loss, damage, or cost arising from your use of the site or from any lease transfer arranged through it — including payments you owe under a lease, fees charged by a bank, a taker who stops paying, or the condition of a car.
9. Changes
We may update these terms. When we do, the effective date at the top changes. If you keep using the site after that, the new terms apply.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of [New Jersey], and any dispute about them will be handled in the courts of that state.
