Privacy policy
What we keep, and why
RideHandoff keeps as little as it can. There are no accounts, no passwords, and no advertising; the only money that ever changes hands with us is an optional listing fee, handled by Stripe. Here is exactly what the site holds and what happens to it.
1. What we collect
When you post a listing
Everything you type into the listing form: the car (year, make, model, trim, color, seats), the lease (bank, monthly payment, end date, odometer, mileage allowance) or the sale (price, mileage, VIN, title status), the deal (fees, cash offered or asked), your notes, your name, your community, your phone number and/or email, and whether that number is on WhatsApp. All of it is there so a taker or buyer can evaluate the listing and reach you.
Photos
Photos you add to a listing are resized in your browser before upload, stored on the server with the listing, shown to anyone who views it, and deleted when the listing is deleted. Location data and other hidden camera information is stripped by the resizing.
When you raise a hand on a listing
Your name, community, phone and/or email, the state you'd register in (for leases), and your message. These go only to the person who posted that listing, on their private view of it. They are not shown on the public board.
When you pay for a listing
Payment is handled by Stripe on Stripe's own pages. We never see or store your card number — we receive only a confirmation that the fee was paid, the amount, and the listing it was for. Stripe's handling of your card is under Stripe's privacy policy.
When you browse
Nothing that identifies you. Listings you save with the heart, and the listings you've posted from your browser, are remembered in your own browser (its local storage) — not on our server. Clearing your browser data clears them.
Server logs
Like every website, our server records basic technical information about requests — IP address, time, page requested — used only to keep the site running and to spot abuse. Logs are kept briefly and deleted.
2. What we never collect
- Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, or dates of birth
- Credit information or credit applications — those go to the leasing bank, never through us
- Bank account, card, or lease account numbers
- Payments between users — deposits, incentives, purchase money. The only payment we take is the listing fee, and Stripe handles the card.
- Your location, contacts, or anything from your device beyond what you type into the form
If a listing form ever asks you for any of these, something is wrong — don't enter it, and tell us.
3. How your listing is shown
A listing's car and lease details are visible to anyone who opens the site. Your name and community appear on the listing card. Your phone number, WhatsApp button and email appear only when someone opens the full listing. We do not hide contact details behind an account because that would just move the problem — but we do ask people, in the terms, to use them only about your listing.
Your listing is shown until you remove it or mark it taken. Listings marked taken stop appearing on the board.
4. Who else sees your information
No one, beyond the people who use the site. We don't sell listings or contact details, don't share them with advertisers, data brokers, dealers, or leasing banks, and don't run advertising or third-party analytics.
These outside services touch the site:
- Google Fonts serves the typefaces. When a page loads, your browser requests the font files from Google, which sees your IP address the way it would for any website using their fonts. No listing data is sent.
- WhatsApp, if you tap a WhatsApp button — that opens WhatsApp with a pre-written message, under WhatsApp's own privacy terms.
- Stripe, when fees are on and you pay for a listing (see above).
- NHTSA and NMVTIS links on sale listings open those government sites with the car's VIN — nothing about you is sent.
We will disclose information if a court order or law requires it.
5. Where it's stored
Listings are stored on the server that runs the site. The server is in [the United States]. Listing changes are protected by a private key that only the browser that posted the listing holds, so only you can edit, mark, or remove your listing from the site itself.
6. How long we keep it
- Active listings — until you remove them.
- Listings marked taken or sold — removed from the board immediately and deleted from the server within 90 days (the server does this automatically).
- Expired listings — off the board when their run ends; deleted with the same 90-day rule.
- Hand-raise requests — deleted with the listing they belong to.
- Payment records — the fact and amount of a fee, kept for 7 years as tax records require. No card details.
- Server logs — deleted within 30 days.
7. Your choices
- Edit, mark, or remove your listing at any time from the "Your listings" panel, in the browser you posted it from.
- If you've lost access to that browser, email us from the address on the listing (or with details that match it) and we'll remove it.
- Ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it. We'll answer within 30 days.
- You can use the site without a phone number by giving an email instead, or vice versa.
8. Cookies
The site sets no cookies. It uses your browser's local storage for the saved-listings heart, your own listings, and which screen you were on. That data stays on your device.
9. Children
The site is for adults arranging car leases and sales. We don't knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has posted, tell us and we'll remove it.
10. Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date at the top changes. Meaningful changes — anything about who sees your data — will be noted on the home page for 30 days.
